Dans un style largement influenc\u00e9 par l\u2019expressionisme allemand, et avec son propre sens du rythme, Alfred Hitchcock r\u00e9alise l\u2019un des sommets du cin\u00e9ma muet britannique. Les rares t\u00e9moins qui ont pu l\u2019apercevoir d\u00e9crivent un individu qui se cache le bas du visage. La nouvelle d\u2019un nouveau meurtre est r\u00e9pandue via les journaux. Non loin de l\u00e0, Mrs. Bunting loue une chambre d\u2019h\u00f4te \u00e0 un myst\u00e9rieux \u00e9tranger qui attire imm\u00e9diatement la suspicion. Daisy, la fille des Bunting, est attir\u00e9e par cet \u00e9trange locataire, ce qui suscite la jalousie de son fianc\u00e9, un policier.
